What is Lectures & Labs
Lectures & Labs
is a learning library based on Mastery Learning, an instructional strategy that allows students to master a topic before moving on to the next level of learning. Students may demonstrate that they have mastered a topic by self-testing with carefully designed evaluation resources.
Each of the topics in the library may be rented for any of three different time periods allowing the topic to be studied, reviewed, and self-tested repeatedly during the selected rental period.
Topics may be studied on any digital device with specific optimizations for smartphone home screens.
Topic formatting accommodates all digital device screens, with special optimizations for the
smartphone home screen.
Why One Topic at a Time Learning is Growing in Popularity
Lectures & Labs
allows learners to focus on fully understanding and mastering a subject or concept through the learning of individual topics before moving on to the next subject and group of topics. The key points about learning
one topic at a time include:
Suitable for Beginners
Learning a new subject through focusing on one topic at a time can provide a solid foundation to build upon as the learned topics can expand into more complex subjects.
Deeper Understanding of a Subject or Concept
It allows for a more focused connection to subject material, aiding a stronger grasp and understanding of subject fundamentals before moving on to more complex topics in the same subject area.
Reduced Cognitive Overload
By concentrating on a smaller group of topics for a single subject, learners minimize the mental strain of juggling multiple subjects at once, which can be beneficial for understanding complex topic inter-relationships.
Within the L&L system, we make every effort possible to help learners identify connections between individual topics and how they relate and interconnect to more robust subjects.
To help address the limitations of learning one topic at a time, we recommend that learners switch between different subjects or concepts periodically, which can help identify connections and improve overall retention of topic to subject relationships.
Access to Learning Topics
There are three topic access categories:
Individual Member, Family Membership, (Memberships ARE NOT REQUIRED),
and Non-Member.
Membership categories also receive free access to general reading items such as classic short stories, how-to articles, and more. Non-Members have rental access to general reading items.
All users are charged a simple access rental fee for each library topic.
There are up to three different access times for each topic. Individual, off-site assessment units may be purchased separately for further study if desired.
Only one topic may be rented at a time by any individual learner.
Study time for each topic is metered specifically for the topic and assessment element.
Topic access by an individually is by a page-access-password, and all page access is metered for each rental period.
Source Materials for Topics
Educational Topics:
Materials are currently obtained from open educational resources (OER); participating small/large textbook publishing companies; and, teacher/professor contributions (primarily lab/home-study assignments).
Where required, attributions are posted with the topic introduction.
